NOUMANA YASEEN
The civilian population of NWFPA is facing the brunt of barbaric violence. They are homeless in homeland because of elements that they served with resources n hospitability. According to the latest updates of UNHCR, there are more than 500,000 IDPs, world?s largest internal migration, packed as poultries in camps n host families in NWFP with the disastrous lack of humanitarian needs. Among these IDPs there are 66,000 pregnant women, some 4,375 are due to give birth in this month(June).United Nation Population Fund, active in the region, is concerned about meager facilities & very few medics. And so much innocent lives who r victim of violence in their pre-natal phase are at risks of death.
DR Muhammad Ali who is supervising UNPFA?s emergency told ?there is no plan for these pregnant women. Doctors are concerned about a lack of emergency obstetric & neonatal care and other complications in the camps. Gods forbid if any emergency befall in camps after evening there is not any lady doctor or expert attendant available in the camps. Executive Director of an NGO working in camps told the shyness of these white collared people and traditional veil culture is biggest obstacle in aid work. On the other hand a poor husband told I haven?t received any aid. So far no one visited us for support. My wife is nine months pregnant but I am helpless, empty handed. Other women told she had four daughters, one has died during migration this time she is expecting a baby boy but both of them are at the verge of death.
These IDPs are facing snakes n Scorpio, lack of food n medicine n to worsen the situation there is rise in diseases. Outbreaks of malaria n measles have been reported; recently children have suffered gastro n now WHO fears IDPS are exposed to water borne diseases on account of poor sanitation ,unhygienic conditions & low vaccination coverage . Doctors are already treating people for high Bp, diarrhea, diabetes, asthma along with mental n psychological disorder ,thus pregnant women there are more vulnerable, predisposed to abortion or death. ?Out of seven women every fifth is anaemic now adding to the potential risks of child birth complications. About 15% of women giving birth might require blood transfusion or surgery?, told DR Khalid a District Project Officer for UNPFA. But there are not proportionate doctors available.
Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussauin told last weekend,?substantial number of lady doctors n doctors were deployed in the camps?73 doctors had been appointed in basic health units, 15 in Mardan, 3 in Harripur, 2 in Noshehra, 2 in Malakand, 13 in Swabi & 6 in Charsadda. Any one can guess much more lady doctors, mid wives or expert attendants are needed along with food, medicine, calcium & iron supplements, vaccination, mosquito nets and as much financial support as possible .UN is lamenting the Luke warm response of the world towards these miserable IDPs, lacking proper before handed planning Pakistan is heavily dependant upon international aid. Though many organizations along with ICRC and PCRC. But having many other projects the expecting mothers are not their only concern or priority. Still much more is left to be done to improve the sanitation conditions n for the provision of food n medics especially to these mothers garnering future. Only a fraction of IDPs are receiving aid n others are left to fend for themselves.
To fix the problem hospitals in dif cities should send medical teams & ambulance on weekly basis. A complete data-base of every pregnant woman should be maintained with the estimated delivery dates n information of normal, cesarean or complicated birth cases that should be in hands of every medical officer there. Proportionate 24/7 rural health centers, labor rooms with mobile van services should be provided. Though UNPFA has set up MUS (mobile unit service) with a lady doctor, expert attendant, a driver & a helper but this service should be expanded to all areas. Proper food rest n medicine is now a luxury for these pregnant women once living in comfort but they should have at least proper medical check up n necessities (things) required at the child birth time.
The expecting mothers are in miserable conditions & inexpressible pains. They, lacking every emergency aid n help , have severe fears for their babies to be born with psychological n mental scars?they keep lying inside oven-heat tents n giving birth in such circumstances is a test of endurance for these mothers n medics too. these people are full of resentment n questions that why their biggest pleasure of parenthood n? labors sweet pain? is turned into a life in death & shame for them. In this ?widening gyre? of peril where ? anarchy n blood dimmed tide? is loosed upon us every one has to come forward to fill the gaps left by the paucity of government or our generations to come will never forgive us.is labours pain in such crisis sweet ??
